Orvieto Cathedral

The building of this Roman Catholic cathedral in northern Italy started in the 13th century. Maitani's Tuscan Gothic facade recalls the cathedrals at both Siena and Florence. Cesare Nebbia designed the original mosaics from 1350-90.

Just like with St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, Salviati's craftsmen also restored the mosaics on the upper part of this cathedral's facade sometime before 1883.

All Saints Church, Lewes

This church has been in existence since at least 1148. With the exception of the tower, it was all demolished and rebuilt in 1805-07 by architect Amon Wilds (the elder). The sanctuary was modified and further extended in 1881-83 by William Basset-Smith and E.J. Munt.

Salviati reredos adorned the space behind the altar, which is now a small hallway. The reredos are presumed to still exist behind mirrors affixed to the walls.

The church was made redundant in 1975 and it is now an arts and crafts community center.

St. Mary the Virgin, Stapleford Tawney

The chancel of this church is the oldest part of the building, dating to around 1220. Other parts were added as the years went by, including the vestry in 1862, when a thorough restoration was also done.

Sir Charles Cunliffe Smith commissioned the mosaic reredos of The Last Supper from Salviati in 1883.

Prince Primate's Palace, Esztergom

Josef (or Jozsef) Lippert von Granberg designed this neo-Renaissance style building as the residence for Esztergom's archbishops based on a request from Cardinal and Prince Primate Janos Simor. The building is located on the Danube River, right across from Bratislava, Slovaki. It was built on the former site of a Jesuit monastery (the church remains) and construction took place 1881-83. Simor bore all of the costs associated with construction, which - at over 600,000 HUF - were more than double preliminary estimates.

Cardinal Simor was a great patron of the arts. The central stairwell of the building contains not only painted portraits of various Primates, but also a Salviati mosaic of Simor's coat of arms. Its iconography comes from Rev. 12.1: ”A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve
stars on her head.”

The second floor of the building now contains the Christian Museum, which was also founded by Simor. It is open to visitors, while the rest - including the Primates' Archives and the Simor Library - still belong to the church. While a complete picture of the mosaic is unavailable due to the private nature of this part of the building, a piece of it can be seen in the upper left-hand corner of this image.

Cercle de Aix-Les-Bains

Parisian architect Abel Boudier designed the Grand Casino for Victor Emmanuel II and it opened in 1850. It was substantially expanded over the years and it was even used as a hospital during World War I.

Salviati decorated the vaulted ceiling of the dome of the South Hall with 300 sq meters of mosaics in 1882-83 after cartoons by Charles Lameire.

Amongst the designs are the twelve symbols of the zodiac, the four seasons, two angels, flora and other stylized motifs.

In 1936, architect Charles Siclis whitewashed much of the interior decoration; however, after a fire in 1963 and further remodeling in the 1980's, the casino has been restored to its former glory.

Villa Oechsler

Located just a few miles inside the German border from Poland - and just a few hundred feet from the Baltic sea - this villa was built in 1883 by Berlin type foundry magnate Hermann Berthold.

The cartoons for the Bathing Graces mosaic on the gable above the sea-side portico were made by A. Bauer.

St. Paul's Within the Walls, Rome

Also known as the American Church in Rome, this Episcopal church was built 1872-76 by G.E. Street. The facade (pictured before recent renovations) contains several mosaics designed by George Breck.

However, it was for the interior that Salviati's Compagnia di Venezia-Murano made several mosaics based on the designs of Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones. The first arch before the apse contains a sparse, desert scene of the Annunciation.

The second arch - located above the choir - is the Tree of Forgiveness (or Life), which was painted in 1892 and transferred to mosaics a year later.

The rear wall depicts Christ in Glory with a crowd of angels looking down from the dome, while five groups of historically important individuals related to Christendom look upwards. Preparations on this section of the mosaic was started in July 1881.

The work was managed by a Signor Castellani who represented the mosaic manufacturer.

St. Peter's Church Colton

Built 1873-74 by architectural firm Paley and Austin, the design of the church is a "mountain chapel" style.

The mosaic reredos by Salviati are from 1883. They depict the four Evangelists in their symbolic forms - angel, lion, bull and eagle - surrounding the Lamb of God on a cross with two angels.

St. Curig's Church

Opened in 1883, this church in Wales by architect G.M. Roberts has now been converted to a Bed and Breakfast, but its original Salviati mosaics have been preserved.

The composition depicting Christ surrounded by angels that is located in the former apse can still be seen in the space now used as a dining room and guest area.

The mosaic is thought to have been commissioned by William Edward Sackville-West, the estate manager to Lord Penrhyn, in memory of the former's wife and was based on cartoons by Clayton and Bell.
