St. Mark's Church, Hamilton Terrace

This Gothic style church by Thomas Cundy was consecrated in 1847. The architect's son Thomas Cundy II finished the spire in 1864. E.B. Ferrey also added a new chancel in 1878.

The Venice and Murano Mosaic Company made the six mosaic panels for the pulpit around 1879. They depict the Four Evangelists flanking Sts. Peter and Paul.

St. Mary-Le-More, Wallingford

David Brandon rebuilt the 11th century church in 1854.

The marble reredos of 1879 is capped with a Salviati mosaic band.

St. John's Hospital Chapel of St. Michael Within, Bath

The hospital was founded around 1180 and the current building dates to 1716.

During the time of Edward VI, the hospital annexed the tiny chapel of St. Michael located at the south-east corner of the Chapel Court complex. Rebuilt in 1723 by William Killigrew, the local architectural firm of Browne and Gill restored it in 1879.

Salviati made a mosaic of the Adoration of the Lamb located under the east windows.

 

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is a Patron of the hospital, which is now a charity dedicated to taking care of the local poor elderly.

La Chiesa di Terrasanta, Bordighera

French architect Charles Garnier not only designed the Chiesa dell'Immacolata Concezione o di Terrasanta in 1879, but also several other buildings in this Riviera town including his own villa. Construction of the church took place 1883-98.

 Salviati made 12 mosaic panels in an ornate Greek style from Garnier's designs.

Eight of the twelve panels are visible in this archival photo.

The mosaics may have been financed by Raphael Bischoffsheim, a Parisian banker whose villa in Bordighera was also designed by Garnier.

St. John the Baptist, Bathwick

This church was built 1861-62 by C.E. Giles, and it was soon enlarged with the addition of a large, south aisle in 1870 by Arthur Blomfield.

Salviati made the mosaic reredos of the "Nativity" above the high altar.

The mosaic flooring of the High Altar, Lady Chapel and Baptistery from 1879 is also by Salviati.

The designs include the sea, net and fishes, as well as the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

St. Erasmus Chapel in Chester Cathedral

The high altar of Chester Cathedral contains a mosaic of the Last Supper by Salviati from 1876. Around 1870 during the restoration by G.G. Scott, the south aisle of the cathedral was shortened and its east end was converted into the St. Erasmus Chapel.

Designed by Clayton and Bell, the Salviati mosaics in the chapel from 1879 are dedicated to the memory of railroad contractor Thomas Brassey (1805-70) and his wife Maria Farringdon Harrison (d. 1877) by their sons Thomas, Henry Arthur (Harry) and Albert Brassey. Thomas the younger had built the Brassey Institute in Hastings.

Birmingham Council House

Designed by local architect Yeoville Thomason in an Edwardian Renaissance style, this building from 1874-79 houses the city council.

The facade contains a central balcony with a niche under the portico that contains a mosaic tympanum by Salviati featuring Municipality giving "Stability" to Liberty and "Power" to Law, while Science, Art, Commerce and Industry look on. The name of the mosaic is not "Brittania Rewarding the Manufactures", as that is the title of the sculpture that represents a similar scene, found on top of the building.

Chester Cathedral

Also known as Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, the current building dates back to the 13th century.

The building underwent a major restoration in 1868-76 by G.G. Scott, leading to its current high Victorian look.

A Salviati mosaic of The Last Supper from 1876 designed by J.R. Clayton decorates the high altar.

Salviati mosaics can also be found in the St. Erasmus Chapel of the cathedral.
