Tyntesfield Chapel
Businessman William Gibbs bought this estate in 1843 to make it his family home. In 1863, he began an extensive three-year renovation under architect John Norton that transformed the 43 room building into what it is today.
The chapel was designed by A.W. Blomfield and built 1873-75. Like Exeter College Chapel, it is also based on Sainte Chapelle in Paris.
A series of mosaic triptych reredos (five in all) by Salviati and designed by Harry Ellis (H.E.) Wooldridge in the chapel's apse depict scenes from the lives of saints including Sts. Peter and Paul, as well as Christ. A panel showing St. Paul's conversion was part of the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company's display at the 1878 Paris Exhibition.
The mosaic floor is also by Salviati.
